Bio

Josef Butts is a professional upright and electric bassist, composer, multi-instrumentalist and music teacher originally from the New Orleans area, now residing in Lafayette, Louisiana.

At a young age he began playing the saxophone, moving on to the piano and guitar, before settling on the bass as his primary instrument. He went on to study jazz and classical bass, eventually earning a degree in jazz studies at the University of Louisiana.  This was followed by a move back to New Orleans, where Josef became an in-demand bassist on the New Orleans music scene and completed a Masters of Music degree at the University of New Orleans, studying under many renowned artists including Terence Blanchard, Chris Severin, Steve Masakowski, Ed Peterson, Harold Batiste, and Bill Hunnington.

This was followed by doctoral studies at The University of Texas at Austin under the guidance of  John Fremgen, Jeff Hellmer and Dr. John Mills.  In 2011 Josef graduated from with the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Jazz Performance. While in Austin, Josef performed with many leading jazz musicians, including Kat Edmonson, Kris Kimura, Kevin Lovejoy, J.J.Johnson, Epfraim Owens, Bruce Saunders, Peter Stolztman, and others.

Josef currently teaches exceptional music students for the Lafayette Parish School System Talented Arts Program and performs regularly across the country with a diverse group of bands led by Yvette Landry, David Egan, Caleb Elliot and others. Additionally, he has recently performed with Jeff Albert’s Instigation Quartet, David Rempis, and led performances by the Joe Butts trio and the Pat Sheng/Joe Butts Quartet.
